A 29-year-old Murrieta man was killed today in a multi- car pileup on Interstate 15, when his car struck a guard rail and he was hit by at least one other motorist in the pre-dawn darkness, the California Highway Patrol said.
CHP officers said Miguel Vega was the driver of a 2003 Mazda that struck a guard rail around 4:30 a.m. near the right shoulder on the downhill northbound freeway lanes approaching Temecula Parkway, spun out and stopped across the two right traffic lanes, with its headlights out.
Jeffrey Dunbar, 50, of Yucaipa, driving a 2010 Nissan, didn’t see the Mazda until it was too late to avoid striking it, the CHP said. The Nissan struck the side of the Mazda, causing it to spin several times.
Witnesses reported the Mazda was struck again by another vehicle. Vega was declared dead at the scene of the crash about 20 minutes later, the CHP said.
All northbound lanes were blocked at the San Diego-Riverside county line during the CHP investigation. Officers opened the right lane about 5:45 a.m., and the rest of the lanes about 8 a.m.
