Bicyclist killed in Palm Springs

A 46-year-old Indio man was fatally injured when the bicycle he was riding on the wrong side of a street was hit by a vehicle in Palm Springs, police said today.

Eric Mendoza was struck at 11:24 p.m. Friday in the 1100 block of North Indian Canyon Drive, near Mel Avenue, said Officer Melissa Desmarais of the Palm Springs Police Department.

A preliminary investigation showed Mendoza was pedaling north in the southbound lanes when he was struck.

Mendoza was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m., according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

No charges were filed against the driver of the vehicle, but the investigation was ongoing.
