Federal agents at the border in Otay Mesa thwarted three attempts to smuggle pot into the United States Monday and seized an estimated $1.26 million worth of the normally illegal weed.
Two Mexican citizens, 26 and 37, were arrested and their vehicles were seized, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, who did not make their names public.
The largest seizure, about 1,900 pounds in 263 packages, was found about 4:50 p.m. in a truck among a load of tacking strips for carpeting, according to CBP.
Another 435 pounds of pot was found in 36 packages hidden in the tires of a truck whose driver tried to cross the border about 11:30 a.m., according to CBP.
About 185 pounds of the stuff in 16 bundles was found attached to the underside of a railcar with magnets, according to CBP.
No immediate arrests were made in connection with the pot found under the railcar.
