Investigators probe cause of Indio restaurant fire

Investigators today probed the cause of a fire that gutted an abandoned commercial building and injured a firefighter in Indio.

The blaze — reported at 8:54 a.m. Sunday — broke out at 84096 Indio Springs Drive, site of the now-closed Mariscos restaurant, according to Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department.

Forty firefighters needed more than two hours to control the flames, Hagemann said.

A firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment of a minor injury, she said.

The fire caused about $750,000 in damage to the building, which has been vacant since June 2009, according to Hagemann.
