MSJC students take first place in public service announcement contest

Students from Mt. San Jacinto College took first place in the public service announcement video contest, “Why Vote?,” it was announced today.

California community college students were asked to submit videos on the importance of voting, said MSJC Spokeswoman Karin Marriott in a news release.

The contest was a collaboration between the Student Senate for the California Community Colleges, the Foundation for the California Community Colleges, the League of Women Voters of California, and the Easy Voter Guide Project.

A $500 prize was given for the first place entry titled “Did Ya Even Vote?,” by MSJC students Darryl Cobbs, Amanda Davis, Aaron Gray, John Marshall, Sheila Miller, Mark Retuya and Edgar Zachula, and instructors Jerome Billins and Tom Merritt.

The PSA will be shown on statewide TV. It will also be shown on the Easy Voter Guide YouTube channel and at the statewide League of Women Voters of California Convention.

The second place and $300 prize went to student Edgar Alvarado and instructor Steven Hirohama of Cerritos Community College for “Don’t Be Lazy.” Third place and a $200 prize went to students Pete Bohnof and Eric Schell and instructor Mark Hall of Butte College for “You Get What You Vote For.”
