A 55-year-old man was arrested tonight on suspicion of touching a 16-year-old girl on a bus in Costa Mesa.
Herath Premaratnea of Los Angeles was arrested by Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies on suspicion of sexual battery as he got off an Orange County Transportation Authority bus at Harbor Boulevard and Wilson Street tonight, the department’s Jim Amormino said.
Sheriff’s investigators received a tip Premaratnea was on the bus, Amormino said.
The girl said she was riding Orange County Transportation Authority bus 47-A near Placentia Avenue and 18th Street about 5:40 p.m. Monday when a man thought to be about 50 years old sitting next to her rubbed her leg and attempted to unzip her pants, Amormino said.
The girl turned away, “frozen in fear,” Amormino said, but at that point her boyfriend called her on her cellphone.
She told her boyfriend what happened, and he and his father picked her up when she got off the bus.
Security video showed the suspect getting off the bus behind the girl and then vanishing, Amormino said.
A review of additional security video indicated the man had tried to molest another girl on a bus, but that victim did not report the incident, Amormino said.
