Temecula resident Carey Poindexter,11, has a motto: “Just because you have asthma, you just can’t let it get you down.”
Carey has had severe chronic asthma since birth. He has been hospitalized 26 times, not including emergency room and doctor visits. He’s been in intensive care four times and incubated once. He takes six medications daily to manage his asthma.
Doctors said Carey would not live to see his 10th birthday — on Nov. 20, Carey will celebrate his 12th birthday.
“Being the mother of a severe asthmatic, there are so many factors that we have to take into consideration just for Carey to have a somewhat normal childhood,” said Vikita Poindexter, Carey’s mom. “We take breathing for granted. For Carey, it can be a monumental task. No one should struggle to breathe.”
Vikita and Carey are ambassadors for many causes throughout Southwest Riverside. Vikita’s name is associated with organizations such as Jacob’s House, Wishes for Children, Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce, Temecula Gospel Music and Arts Festival, Inland Valley Black Chamber of Commerce, Oak Grove Center, and several others.
Following in his mother’s footsteps, Carey is now taking on a role as Junior Ambassador for the American Lung Association. And he’s wasting no time.
His story will be featured on NBC in San Diego at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 6 and on NBC Los Angeles at 10 a.m. on Nov. 14. He will be an honored guest Nov. 12 at Leonesse Cellars in Temecula during the “Artists for Air” concert beginning at 6 p.m.
The family-friendly event at Leonesse will feature a talented lineup of musicians including Kim Horn, Earl Johnson Jr., Darryl Williams, Korey Kingston, Jason Weber, Gene-o Cole, Debora Galan, and Greg Cozzo as Master of Ceremonies.
All proceeds from “Artists for Air” will benefit the American Lung Association. The event is a kick-off to the American Lung Association’s “Fight for Air Walk” on Nov. 14 at the Embarcadero Marina Park in San Diego.
Tickets for “Artists for Air” can be purchased online at www.malamamarketing.com. Advance tickets are $10 per person; $15 at the door. Catering for the event will be provided by Simply Sharon’s.
