Murrieta police are investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday evening on Via Princessa near Murrieta Hot Springs Road, authorities said.
Witnesses reported hearing about four to five shots after 5 p.m.
After the shooting the victim was taken to a gas station at the corner of Murrieta Hot Springs and Winchester roads, where a GMC sport utility vehicle stopped at the gas pumps with the victim inside.
The SUV has two gunshot holes in the front windshield, and the rear window had apparently been shot out. One of the rear tires was blown out.
Initial reports said the victim had been shot in the head, but was conscious and able to communicate with investigators before taken away by ambulance, officials said at the gas station.
A mile stretch of Via Princessa was closed where it connects to Murrieta Hot Springs as investigators searched the area.
As of 6:25 p.m., officers using flashlights are combing the neighborhood looking for evidence as neighbors mill around in small groups talking about what happened.

As of about 8:30pm the section of Via Princessa from Murrieta Hot Springs Rd to where it becomes Calle Del Lago is still closed with crime scene tape up. Calle Del Lago is reopened.
Police made me walk home from a parking lot a half mile away in the dark and yelled at me and my wife for walking in the street saying that it was to preserve evidence while they themselves were standing in the same street.
