Winds howling down the San Joaquin Valley are hitting Christmas travelers crossing over the major mountain pass separating Southern California from the rest of the state.
California Highway Patrol officers say winds along Interstate 5 are estimated to be blowing at 35 miles per hour, and gusting up to 60 mph.
The eight-lane freeway over the Grapevine is open, with wind advisories posted.
A string of about 30 power poles blew down just north of the L.A.-Kern county line, adjacent to both Interstate 5 and state Route 99. CHP officers said.
