A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew searched off the coast of northern San Diego County today for victims of a possible boating accident after a sail and mast were found floating in the ocean west of Del Mar.
A boater reporting finding the debris about nine miles from shore shortly before 1 p.m., USCG Petty Officer Henry Dunphy said.
A police boat crew retrieved the wreckage, and the Coast Guard sent an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to scan the seas in the area. No victims or damaged vessels had been found by early evening.
It was unclear how long the search would continue. Authorities have not received any reports of missing boats in the San Diego region, according to Dunphy.
