Area high school students to compete in 28th annual Riverside County Academic Decathlon

Dozens of high school students from Southwest Riverside schools will be among the more than 140 students throughout the county to participate in the 28th annual Riverside County Academic Decathlon.

Students from Beaumont High School, Corona High School, Elsinore High School, Great Oak High School, Hemet High School, La Sierra High School, Lakeside High School, Norte Vista High School, North High School, Palm Desert High School, Perris High School, Rubidoux High School, Temecula Preparatory, Temecula Valley High School, Temescal Canyon High School and West Valley High School, will compete in the Jan. 29 decathlon at Lakeside High School in Lake Elsinore.

This year’s theme is “The Great Depression” and participating students will write essays, deliver prepared and impromptu speeches and interview with judges about the topic.

Students will end the decathlon Feb. 5, taking seven written tests and competing in the Super Quiz event, which is open to a public audience. The quiz competition is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Lakeside High, 32593 Riverside Drive.

Individual and team winners will be announced during a Feb. 8 Awards Ceremony at Lakeside High School.

The decathlon is sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education.

The winning team will go on to compete March 11 -14 in Sacramento at the California Academic Decathlon.
