Suspect shot by resident during Lake Mathews home burglary

A convicted burglar broke into a Lake Mathews home today, but he was shot by a resident and later arrested, the sheriff’s department reported.

Matthew Zuniga, 27, suffered a grazing wound in the arm when a 63-year- old man opened fire with a shotgun, authorities said

After being treated, Zuniga was booked into jail on suspicion of burglary and violating probation, sheriff’s Sgt. Dan Kelly said.

The resident — who was uninjured — came home about 9 a.m. to find his house being looted, Kelly said.

“The victim stated there were numerous weapons in the home and did not know if the suspect was armed,” Kelly said. “The victim armed himself with a shotgun for his own safety.”

Zuniga ran from the house and was found hiding in nearby hills, Kelly said.

The break-in happened a day after Zuniga was supposed to begin serving a six-month jail term for  felony burglary, according to court records. He also was placed on three years probation in connection with the earlier crime.

  • Thanks to our Founding Fathers and the 2nd Amendment (adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the Bill of Rights) citizens can still protect themselves and their property – although president Obama is doing everything he possibly can to take that right away.

The sad fact of this incident is two fold: 1) Very unfortunate he was not more severly injured – like perhaps his arm being blown off; 2) It would appear quite obvious this felon should not have been on the “loose” under any circumstance.

Another prime example of the damage inflected by liberalism upon our justice system – and virtually every other American system as well.
