UPDATE:
The California Highway Patrol reported on its website that all lanes of Interstate 15 through Temecula have been opened as of 8:50 a.m. The SigAlert for the area was canceled at 9:14 a.m.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Traffic in the Temecula area is backed up on Interstate 15 following a fatal motorcycle accident that prompted officials to close most of the freeway for a short period, according to a California Highway Patrol website posting.
The accident was reported at 6:20 a.m. at southbound I-15 and Rancho California Road, the CHP reported. Investigators initially closed down the Rancho California Road offramp, then shut down all lanes of the freeway.
Traffic is backed up on both the I-15 and Interstate 215 for miles and has reached Wildomar and Murrieta and into Menifee. The backup has also caused backups on side streets and motorists seek alternative routes. There are reports some motorists are using the shoulder to pass and traffic is backed up on Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Winchester Road approaching the freeways.
At 8:19 a.m., the CHP reported that two of the four lanes have been opened.
There was no information available about the motorcyclist or details of the crash.

I was sitting on the off ramp at RC making a left turn over the bridge when I saw this accident take place. Cars trying to get out of the way, people stopping, it was a mess. By the time I got back to the area, CHP had pulled up and closed down the on ramp to the southbound I-15. I managed to miss the 2 hour traffic delay. Prayers to the family of the motorcyclist.
This headline is shameful. How dare a reporter or a news source claims HEADACHES for drivers when someone has lost their lives. I’m certain that the family and friends of this victim will be suffering from much worse pain than a headache. You should be ashamed.
Took me 2hrs to get from Baxter (Wildomar) to Rancho Cal. I turned around & came home. That was at 8:40 My 45min commute to Escondido was going to turn into a 4-5hr one.
My thoughts are with the families of both parties.
Couldn’t agree with you more “Disgusted.” A better choice of words would be more appropriate.
Couldn’t agree more that the headline is tacky. I understand people are concerned to get to work, but a wonderful life was lost. The motorcyclist was a U.S Marine who works with me and has served our country for over 20 years. He deserved to be honored. My prayers and thoughts are with his family during this trying time…

I couldn’t agree more with “Disgusted.” The rest of us should realize how fortunate we are to have just a “headache” – We could have been the unfortunate person involved in the accident.
Wow….just a shame that this incident resulted in a loss of life. I wish all the morning drivers on SB 15 in the morning took a more vested interest in each others safety. Been driving that route since 94′, and it’s like NASCAR now…. Thoughts are with the family.
What major command was the Marine with. I know names can’t be realeased. MEF, Wing, Base, Div MLG…
He was a Master Guns in the Marine Corps. He didn’t deserve to die this way. A “Headache” is nothing compared to what he went through this morning and the hole that his family will feel for the rest of their lives. When he didn’t show up this morning.. we all wished it was only because he was stuck in traffic, or only because he had a headache! When in fact, he lost his life on that very freeway. I am proud to see all the wonderful and supportive posts here. I hope the reporter thinks twice before using insensitive wording next time.
For all of you that are so worried about arriving to work on time, and not even mention anything about a life being taken, well YOU DISGUST me! He was like a father figure to me and had a family. I hope you apologize to this blog for being more concerned about your self than the welfare for our fallen brother. I had the Honor of working with this man for 4 years, and it’s posts like this that disgust me with society today.
Having lost my husband in a motorcycle accident I feel deeply for this man and his family and friends. I don’t know anything about him, but if he was married, please pass on to his wife there is a group in Temecula that offers great support.

My deepest sympathy to everyone who knew him.
God Bless the Marine!! Prayers to his family, friends, and coworkers.
It’s a very sad loss of life, but people have to slow down; bikes and other vehicles alike. I’m recently relocated from Chicago and I have never seen such a consentration of lunatics than I have in California. Trucks drive like they’re vettes and bikes ride like they are surrounded in armor. I don’t ride my Harley out here because people are plain crazy. Bless him and bless his family and please slow down people!
I didn’t know this cyclist, but had seen him several times on my own way riding in to Camp Pendleton; I recognized the bike in my cage this morning. It’s heartening, I didn’t know him but knew the bike. Safe journey’s to all.
I was a witness to this mornings accident, I am deeply saddened by it. I said a silent Prayer while standing over him. god bless his
family and friends such a loss….to ALL OF US. This one will haunt me. Please PLEASE people be aware of motorcycles.
I had the same feeling when I read this article.
Very poorly written. How insensitive can you be? Also nothing was even mentioned about the person who lost their life, not even to say that there were no details at this time.
Would it have been more focused on the individual if it were some one driving in a car, truck, or SUV? Cyclists are people too, with lives and families.
Nobody likes to be stuck in traffic and have their schedules disrupted but prioritize what really matters.
The Motor Cyclist is a Marine MGySgt. He was my mentor and close friend. Please pray for his family, friends and to all the Marines who he has helped along the way. Semper Fi!
Dear Nerak,
It was not poorly written, this is just a news report saying WHAT happened, its not suppose to show any emotion towards the life lost because of all of the sensitive political correct liberals out there that cause our media to have to take all emotion out of their stories. Please do not criticize the writer when they are trying not to step on to many toes. If it is so poorly written, please by all means get up and write it your self.
Thanks,
Chase:)
I am one of those Marines that he has helped. I have known him for almost 6 years since I was a PFC. He will not be forgotten and will always be in our hearts. Semper Fi!!!

I was one of those hundreds of motorist stuck in that traffic on Jefferson, my question is “where was our Highway Patrol” they should have been in the major intersection helping move the traffic. You can not move heavy morning traffic off the freeway onto Jefferson without giving assistant on the side roads, It was a NIGHTMARE…we should learn from this and make changes accordingly.

To Jamie Kaye: putting aside the fact that a father and a soldier died today, I’m sure we’re all very sorry about your traffic nightmare.
I’m just guessing here that CHP was busy scraping this guy off the highway as well as securing the immediate area to ensure more accidents didn’t occur; undoubtedly because they know there are selfish and impatient motorists such as yourself.
When I drove by the scene heading North, I saw 2 things. Lot’s of CHP doing their jobs and this poor soul covered with a yellow blanket in the middle of the highway.
Anyone complaining about traffic needs to grow up.
Nice going Chase! Way to add your personal politics to this trajedy. You are brilliant and sensitive. My prayers go out to the Sgts family, friends and fellow Marines.
My prayers have gone out to the Sargent and his family. But Im just making the clear statement that this sucks. wish that he could show the emotion in the article. Im simply defending the writer, that people are attacking.
The Marine Corps lost an amazing leader and mentor to all, MGYSGT Brent L. Sherrell had achieved so much in life after raising 3 beautiful boys with his wife and spending many many yeas in the Marine Corps earning the highest rank a man can reach and now he has someone complaining about traffic?? THIS MAN FOUGHT OVERSEAS SO THAT YOU CAN SIT IN YOUR FU*KIN CAR AND DRIVE TO WORK THIS MORNING…. so before you talk crap look at yourself in the mirror…. myself along with the rest of the Marine Corps will miss you Master Gun! God Bless.
I feel so bad for his family. And the fact that he was a soldier makes it even harder to swallow. Prayers to his family. Everyone was late today, but we all got to our destinations. He did not.
I was Honored to have went to school, and go though Marine Corps boot camp, with MGySgt. Sherrell. A great man, father, and US Marine. Smooth seas Devil Dog 12/5 SemperFi. Jeff Wagner. portland, OR
