The Mt. San Jacinto College American Sign Language Department’s first annual American Sign Language Movie Event is scheduled April 29 and 30 in Menifee.
The ASL Movie Event, which is open to the public, features films scripted, performed and filmed by students from the ASL Department.
Students involved in the films are from the Temecula, Murrieta, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Hemet and Menifee area, as well as from the college District’s 1,700-square-mile boundaries.

Four short films will be judged on April 29 by MSJC Superintendent/President Dr. Roger Schultz, Moon Feris, co-owner of the local Western Interpreting Network, and Mr. Ed Kelly, Director of Orange County Deaf Equal Access. Students will receive awards based in categories like Best Costume Design, Best Male and Female Actor, or Best Plot.
In addition to raising funds for department needs, the ASL Movie Event aims to raise awareness of the department, said Leslie Greer, ASL Department chair.
“ASL courses are beneficial to deaf and hearing students alike,” Ms. Greer said. “Learning American Sign Language is a skill that removes communication barriers and can be useful in any profession, including nursing and law enforcement.”
