Glendora: South Pasadena officer killed during training exercise at gun range

South Pasadena Police Officer Kevin Sandoval collapsed, struck his head and died Tuesday during training at a shooting range in the Angeles National Forest, authorities said.

Sandoval, 23, of Covina, was among the South Pasadena and Pasadena police officers training at the Burro Canyon Shooting range when he collapsed about 2 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Ming Hsu.

“For unknown reasons he collapsed during training and struck his head,” Hsu said.

Some members of the Pasadena Police Department’s Special Weapons Team who are paramedics came to Sandoval’s aid, authorities said. Sandoval was flown to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora where he was declared dead about 3 p.m.

Lt. John Corina of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau said tonight that Sandoval suddenly collapsed during a break in a firearms training course and hit his face on the ground. He never regained consciousness after he collapsed.

Sandoval had been a officer with the South Pasadena Police Department for two years and previously had been a cadet there for 18 months. He is survived by his parents and a sister, Hsu said.

An autopsy is pending.

A 23-year-old South Pasadena police officer died Tuesday at a shooting range in the Angeles National Forest, authorities said.

The officer was identified as Kevin Sandoval of Covina, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ming Hsu.

Sandoval was among the South Pasadena and Pasadena police officers training at the Burro Canyon Shooting range when he collapsed about 2 p.m., Hsu said.

Sandoval had been a sworn officer with the South Pasadena Police Department for 2 years and previously had been a cadet there for 18 months.

He is survived by his parents and a sister, Hsu said.

The South Pasadena police force has 34 sworn officers.

An autopsy is pending.

UPDATE: 4:16  p.m.

The officer is  reported to be a 23-year-old man, and according to ABC7, the officer slipped and hit his head around 1:30 p.m.during a training exercise at a gun range on East Fork Road near Highway 39 in the Angeles National Forest.

When a sheriff’s helicopter rescue crew arrived, the officer was in complete cardiac arrest, according to ABC7.

County Fire Inspector Matt Levesque says the officer was flown to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital.

He was pronounced dead just before 2:30 p.m.
