LAPD: Man being released from LA jail, comandeers ambulance, crashes it and is fatally shot by officers

A man who commandeered an ambulance, crashed into a Boyle Heights church and then barricaded himself inside was fatally shot by Los Angeles police, and one officer was injured in the confrontation, according to authorities.

The rampage began around 2:30 p.m. Saturday as the suspect was being released from the downtown Twin Towers jail, said LAPD spokeswoman Officer Norma Eisenman.

“The suspect was being transported from Twin Towers to a hospital in a private ambulance,” Eisenman said. “He attacked one of the attendants and commandeered the ambulance.”

Eisenman said the suspect crashed the ambulance into a church in the 1500 block of Bridge Street, near Echandia Street, and then barricaded himself inside.

An officer-involved shooting occurred at 5 p.m., and the suspect was fatally wounded, said Sgt. Kristin Hagerty at the LAPD Hollenbeck Station.

One officer was stabbed in the attempted arrest, Eisenman said.

“We don’t know how that happened yet, but the officer is at a hospital in stable condition at this time,” she said.

The deceased man’s name was withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

The fatal OIS was being investigated by the LAPD and the L.A. County District Attorney’s office shooting review team.
