why does the country still observe any holiday, dealing with columbus? now that facts have been brought out, proving that columbus wasnt the first european to this continent.
there was the vikings around the year 1000. then other europeans in the 1300s(which is thought where columbus aquired the maps). and the chinese in the early 1400s. another thing, columbus was on a voyage to find gold for spain. which means he was sent as a pirate by spain. he and his crew enslaved, stole from, and killed the natives.
holidays that honor columbus is as bad as celebrating black beard, captain kidd, and captain morgan. movies and stories about pirates are interesting facts. but, i dont think we should have major holidays about pirates. i think america should adjust itself accordingly. to do away with all this ado about a guy who isnt as important as he was thought of, hundreds of years ago. when people werent as educated or informed as we are today.
they thought columbus discovered america. which he didnt. there were people already living here for thousands of years. just because the natives didnt speak or write the same language as them. doesnt mean they werent people.
if columbus’ decendents feel strongly about holidays for their ancestor. then that means they would feel ok about a person, who doesnt speak their language, invading their home and then claiming it as their own.
please do away with holidays, that arent about truly important people.
