Corona: 91 Freeway closed in both directions due to shooting

A man suspected of firing at California Highway Patrol officers who responded to a traffic collision on the 91 Freeway in Corona was shot and killed Tuesday night.

The officer-involved shooting occurred on the eastbound 91 Freeway, just west of the Interstate 15 around 8:30 p.m., according to the CHP.

Officers had responded to the scene of a two-car crash on the eastbound Riverside Freeway when they were confronted by a man holding a gun, according to published reports.

Officers reportedly ordered the man to drop his gun but he refused and reportedly fired at least one round at the officers, one of whom shot the suspect.

The suspect died at the scene, KCAL9 reported.

The shooting shut down all lanes on the eastbound portion of the freeway. It is not known how long the lanes will be closed.

A helicopter landed on the freeway around 10:30 p.m. to carry a CHP officer from the scene, it was reported.
