A 78-year-old Indio man was killed when he lost control of his 2010 Toyota and crashed into a tree on Highway 74 near Mountain Center, the California Highway Patrol reported today.
The crash was at about 6:05 p.m. Friday as the eastbound driver, identified as Jackie McDonald, went off the road in a mountainous area.
The vehicle caught fire and McDonald was trapped inside the car, according to the county coroner. He was not wearing his seatbelt and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics at 6:25 p.m., the coroner said.
There were on passengers in the vehicle and the CHP was investigating the cause of the crash.

I drove by that area around 6 AM the next day and the tree he hit was still smoldering so I called the fire dept. R.I.P.
