Mountain Center: Fiery crash on Highway 74 fatal to Indio man

A 78-year-old Indio man was killed when he lost control of his sedan and crashed into a tree on Highway 74 near Mountain Center, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s office.

The crash occurred just past 6 p.m. Friday as the eastbound driver went off the road in a mountainous area. The vehicle caught fire and the man was trapped inside the car, according to the coroner.

The man was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m., the coroner said. The man’s name was withheld pending notification of family.
