Damage was reported in the slow lane of the freeway at Temecula Creek Bridge, necessitating a closure, Caltrans spokeswoman Shelli Lombardo said.
She did not disclose the nature of the damage but said the lane was expected to be closed through the night.
The closure was interrupting the evening commute, and motorists were advised to prepare for delays.
