‘Twilight Saga’ continues to suck the life out of box office competition

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part I” topped the North American box office for the third straight week, according to final figures out today.

The werewolf-vampire fable raked in another $16.5 million from Friday to Sunday, boosting its domestic take to $246.9 million, Hollywood.Com Box Office reported.

“The Muppets” ($11 million) was in second place, followed by “Hugo” ($7.5 million), “Arthur Christmas” ($7.4 million) and “Happy Feet Two” ($5.9 million).

Rounding out the top 10 were “Jack and Jill” ($5.3 million), “The Descendants” ($4.7 million), “Immortals” ($4.4 million), “Tower Heist” ($3.9 million) and “Puss in Boots” ($3 million).

The dozen top-grossing movies earned a combined $73.5 million over the weekend, down 6.02 percent from the $78.3 million generated by the 12 big earners during the same period last year.
