A 2-month-old kitten that somehow wedged himself in a scrap piece of drainage pipe is safe today, thanks to the efforts of firefighters and members of Riverside County Animal Services.

The male kitten was found by a good Samaritan Saturday afternoon near his auto repair shop in Mira Loma, according to Animal Services spokesman John Welsh.
The man took the pipe with the trapped meowing cat to an animal shelter in Jurupa Valley, where veterinary technicians from Animal Services sedated the cat, hooked him up to a heart monitor and tried to free him using lubricants.
When they were unable to extricate him in 30 minutes, firefighters used the Jaws of Life to cut the cat out of the pipe.
“The kitten is doing OK, but veterinary professionals will continue to monitor his condition,” Welsh said.
He is expected to recover in about a week and will be made available for adoption at the Riverside Animal Shelter, Welsh said.
