Drainage project to slow traffic at Palm Desert crossroads through Friday

A Palm Desert thoroughfare will be closed today through Friday, a city spokesman said.

Work began on the second phase of drainage and intersection improvements at Cook Street at Hovley Lane East, and the intersection should be reopened sometime Friday, a city spokesman said.

Today through Friday, Hovley will be closed to all but residents who need to get to their homes, and only right turns will be allowed until the work is done, David Hermann of the city said.

Left turns from Cook will be restricted, but through traffic will be allowed, he said.

Once the storm drain is installed, workers will fill a roughly 15-foot-deep trench and repave the road, Hermann said.

“Major delays in and around the intersection are expected,” he said.

Motorists were urged to use alternate routes, such as Country Club Drive, Fred Waring Drive, and Portola Avenue.

The larger, $2.5 million job should be done in February, Hermann said.
