A magnitude 3.1 quake shook the Coachella Valley and was epicentered about 17 miles northeast of Palm Springs, according to automated U.S. Geological Survey sensors.
The shaker hit at 6:47 p.m. and was in the mountains about 4.3 miles beneath the surface of the mountains north of the Coachella Valley.
In the hour after the quake, about 65 people in the Coachella and Yucca valleys had reported they felt it. They described the shaking as weak to moderate on a USGS web page.
