Indian Wells tennis tournament to host world-ranked champs

The 2012 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells will feature the tournament’s No. 1-ranked defending champions, Novak Djokovic and Caroline Wozniacki, along with No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal and three-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1 Maria Sharapova, the tennis tournament’s director said Wednesday.

Other players announced include Roger Federer, No. 4-ranked Andy Murray, former No. 1 Andy Roddick, 2011 WTA Player of the Year and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, No. 3-ranked Victoria Azarenka and two-time tournament champion Kim Cljisters.

The tournament, slated for March 5-18 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, is the largest combined two-week event in the world for the Association of Tennis Professionals and Women’s Tennis Association, and features 11 former tournament champions and 14 Grand Slam champions, tournament director Steve Simon said.

For the first time in tournament history, players will compete for more than $11 million in prize money, with the men’s and women’s singles champions taking home $1 million each, Simon said.

The women’s qualifying draw is March 5-6 and the men’s qualifying rounds are March 6-7. First-round main draw play will begin March 7 for the women and March 8 for the men. The men’s and women’s singles championship finals are March 18.
