Boy shot on Riverside street dies

A 14-year-old boy shot on a Riverside street has been taken off life support, according to a broadcast report.

Detectives handling the case were not immediately available to comment on the report by KCAL9 that the boy, identified by the station as Lareanz Simmons, had been taken off life support.

Riverside police said they are still seeking the man who shot the boy around 6 p.m. Thursday in the 2200 block of Georgia Street near Vasquez Park.

The victim was confronted by a man who jumped out of a car and fired five to six rounds, striking him several times, Riverside Police Department Sgt. Dan Russell said.

The victim was rushed to Riverside Community Hospital barely clinging to life.

The suspect fled in what witnesses described as a light-colored Mitsubishi Mirage or similar sedan.

The reason for the attack was unclear.
