A single-engine Cessna airplane today made an emergency landing inside Joshua Tree National Monument, according to a Riverside County Sheriff’s report.
The pilot, 64-year-old Sun City resident Richard Piccirilly was flying the airplane from Sedona, AZ to Hemet when he ran out of fuel, according to officials.
Piccirilly was forced to make an emergency landing on Cottonwood Springs Road, causing minor damage to his plane.
Neither Piccirilly nor his passenger, 28-year-old Tina Carroll of San Diego, was injured.
The FAA was notified and is investigating the incident.

Joshua Tree National Park (it hasn’t been “Monument” since 1994) is a very long way from Hemet. The reporters who wrote this should get out the bars and start to learn about the region.
The headline says “…emergency landing in Hemet…” but the story clearly says Joshua Tree. They’re not even close. It’s time the headline writer actually looked at the story.
