Pair of crashes east of Coachella sends two to hospital

A pair of crashes on Interstate 10 east of Coachella sent two people to hospitals today and caused some extensive traffic delays.

Around 1:45 p.m., a travel trailer being hauled by a truck overturned in a three-vehicle crash on westbound I-10 east of the Cactus City rest area.

Four people were injured in the crash, which also involved two sport utility vehicles, Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said.

One person was transported to a hospital, and the other three refused treatment, Hagemann said.

Westbound lanes were blocked but were re-opened shortly after 3 p.m.

One eastbound lane was expected to be closed for about four hours for cleanup, California Highway Patrol Officer Joe Zagorski said.

Traffic was backed up for about five miles in each direction, he said.

Around 1 p.m., meanwhile, a motorcyclist was suffered moderate injuries when he crashed on eastbound I-10 about two miles west of Corn Springs Road near Desert Center.

The motorcyclist had to be airlifted to a hospital, Hagemann said.
