Riverside man arrested on suspicion of killing an acquaintance

A Riverside man suspected of killing an acquaintance during a confrontation in a garage was behind bars today.

Kevin Scott Mansfield, 31, was arrested on suspicion of murder Tuesday night after allegedly inflicting fatal injuries on a 31-year-old man, whose identity was withheld pending notification of his family.

Mansfield was being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

According to police, officers were dispatched around 8 p.m. to a residence in the 5900 block of Birch Street, near Magnolia Elementary School, in a historic part of the city known as the “Wood Streets.”

Officers were directed to a converted detached garage on the backside of a property, where they discovered the victim dead in a small room, Sgt. David Amador said.

Mansfield was located nearby about 20 minutes later, according to Amador. He said the suspect had been free on bail after being arrested earlier this year on suspicion of robbery.

Investigators would not disclose a possible motive or the circumstances behind the alleged attack.
