Motorist succumbs to injuries from Ortega Highway crash

An Indio woman who was critically injured when an antique military vehicle in which she was a passenger went 150 feet over the side of Ortega Highway west of Lake Elsinore has died, authorities said.

Estee Sperrysmith, 49, was pronounced dead at 8:22 a.m. Thursday at Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, according to the Riverside County coroner’s office.

The crash about two miles west of Grand Avenue was reported at 6:46 p.m. Tuesday and drew 25 firefighters to the scene, said Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

Sperrysmith was taken to the medical center by helicopter suffering from traumatic leg injuries and a shoulder injury. She was wearing a safety belt, the coroner’s office said.

A man who was driving the truck was transported by ground ambulance in critical condition, Hagerman said. His name was not released.
A California Highway Patrol dispatcher said the victims were in an antique military vehicle.

Ortega Highway, also known as state Route 74, remained closed most of Tuesday night as a result of the accident.
