Three arrests made in Coachella carjacking

Deputies arrested a Coachella man on suspicion of carjacking and threatening to kill a man and his 2-year-old son, a sheriff’s department spokesman said today.

Ruben Corria Esquivel, 22, jumped into the victim’s car at about 7 p.m. Friday while the occupant and his son waited outside a shopping center in the 49-200 block of Grapefruit Boulevard in Coachella, according to sheriff’s Sgt. John Hignight.

The victim said Esquivel demanded his car and money, and at one point, threatened to kill them during the robbery, Hignight said. Fearing for his and his son’s safety, the victim fought back and suffered minor cuts and scratches, he said.

The victim did not see a weapon during the attack, Hignight said.

An off-duty police officer who witnessed the attacked identified two other Coachella residents as suspects. Deputies arrested Paul Stephen Anaya, 20, and a 17-year-old juvenile, according to the sergeant. Esquivel and Anaya were being held at the Riverside County Jail in Indio in lieu of $150,000 bail, jail records showed.
