Student threatens to jump off building at Palm Desert HS

A student threatened to jump off the roof of a building at Palm Desert High School today and then pulled a knife on officers, who used a Taser to subdue him, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

A school officer was told around noon that a student was on the roof of a campus building. The officer got on the roof and began talking to the apparently distraught teen, and eventually they both sat down, sheriff’s Deputy Angel Ramos said.

“He was making statements that he wanted to end his life,” Ramos said.

When sheriff’s deputies got on the roof, the student stood up, got out a pocketknife and “started to advance toward officers in a threatening manner,” Ramos said.

When he was a good distance from the edge of the roof, deputies used a Taser to subdue the student, who was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, Ramos said.

No one else was hurt.

A precautionary lockdown of the school at 74910 Aztec Road was in effect for about an hour as a result of the situation, Ramos said.

The student’s name was withheld.
