Riverside patrol car hits pedestrian

A woman pedestrian suffered major injuries today when an on-duty Riverside police officer struck her as she was trying to cross the street, a police spokesman said.

At about 7:50 a.m., the officer was driving his marked unit north on Madison Street, and as the officer approached the intersection at Emerald
Street, the woman stepped into the street walking west from the east roadway edge of Madison outside of the crosswalk and was hit by the officer, according to Riverside police Lt. Eric Charrette.

Riverside Fire Department and American Medical Response paramedics treated the woman, who was transported to Riverside Community Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition, Charrette said.

Members of the police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team were investigating, he said.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call 951-826-8722.
