California Highway Patrol investigators said they are not sure who was at fault in a grinding head-on collision between two vehicles that killed three people north of Norco today.
A sport utility vehicle and a sedan crashed head-on in the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 midway between the Santa Ana River bridge and Limonite Avenue at about 1:40 a.m., the coroner’s office said.
The crash scene was north of Norco and south of Ontario.
Nicholas Perez, 23, of Corona, was driving the SUV, according to the coroner’s report. He was taken to Corona Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:38 a.m.
The male driver of the sedan and a female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene at 1:51 a.m. The coroner’s office said today it had not yet identified the people in the sedan.
CHP officers said it was unclear which vehicle was headed in the wrong direction on the freeway, or why.
