Earthquake strikes near El Centro

A magnitude-4.0 earthquake rattled the far southeastern reaches of Southern California today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The temblor struck at 8:06 a.m. at a depth of 5.5 miles, its epicenter 12 miles southwest of El Centro, according to a preliminary, computer-generated report from the USGS.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.
