New Submarina Grill cooks up fresh fare in Riverside

On May 15, Larry Dockstader opened his second Submarina California Subs – a sub sandwich restaurant using only fresh-baked bread and high-quality meats, cheeses and vegetables, it was recently announced.

While this is the second Submarina store for Dockstader, the Riverside location will be the first Submarina Grill, which is expected to roll out nationally.

The new Submarina Grill will expand upon the company’s reputation for providing customers with the freshest ingredients by offering fresh baked bread on-site, a full kitchen including grills and a brand new menu featuring hot, grilled sandwiches that was created, in part, by Dockstader.

The new menu will include sandwiches with fresh grilled meat such as Philly Cheese Steak, California Steak, Chicken Parmesan and the Reuben.

“I’m excited and honored to be the first Submarina Grill in the franchise system,” said Dockstader, in a released statement. “We are building upon a strong foundation of healthy options and innovative ideas. I think Submarina Grill will be a huge success in Riverside, and I look forward to bringing more locations to the area over the next two years.”

Additionally, the new Submarina Grill will be a family-run business. Dockstader, who has been around the food industry since his youth, will be joined by his wife, Dianne, and his 22-year-old son, Michael.

Dianne and Michael will act as the in-store managers at the new location. Michael also had a part in the new menu as he created one of the breads, the jalapeno and melted cheese-topped bread which has become very popular in many restaurants.

Due to the positive community response in the area, Submarina decided to launch its first test kitchen at the new Riverside location before the national roll-out of Submarina Grill.

“Loyalty means a lot to us at Submarina,” said president and CEO Bruce Rosenthal in a statement. “We are looking forward to the community’s response regarding the new Submarina Grill. Hopefully, our customers enjoy the experience and encourage us to expand the new menu items nationally.”

With a comfortable, upscale atmosphere and friendly and personal customer service, the concept is well-positioned for growth and success in the fast-casual restaurant category, which accounts for 35 percent of all restaurant sales. Submarina currently has more than 50 locations, primarily in Southern California, where more than 40 stores are located.

Additional locations include Georgia, Michigan, New York, Tennessee and Guam. Six to eight new stores are expected to open in the first half of 2012, with more than openings projected for the second half of 2012.

Submarina Grill is located at 3540 Riverside Plaza Dr., in Riverside.
