Indio: Shadow Hills HS student dies after practice, autopsy performed

An autopsy was performed today on the body of a 16-year-old boy found unconscious at Shadow Hills High School but the results are pending, according to authorities.

Officials declined to discuss a published report that the youth was a water polo player who died after a practice session.

The teen was reported unconscious and unresponsive in the pool area at Shadow Hills High School about 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

He was transported to a hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead at 10:27 p.m. at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, according to the fire department and the coroner’s office.

The boy was identified as Christian Fernandez Morales, said Riverside County sheriff’s Deputy Angel Ramos. The post-mortem examination was conducted
today, according to a woman at the coroner’s office who declined to give her name.

The Desert Sun reported that Morales had just finished his junior year at Palm Desert High School and was practicing with a summer league through USA Water Polo when he passed out in the pool.
