Two killed in Norco crash identified

Authorities today identified a woman and her passenger who were killed in a rear-end collision with a truck on southbound Interstate 15 in Norco.

The crash happened around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday near Second Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victims were Cynthia Barona, 38, of Corona and Maytorena Mandalena, 32, of Riverside, according to the Riverside County coroner’s office.

Barona was driving her 2008 Cadillac CTS behind a 1998 Freightliner at about 60 mph and plowed into the back of the truck for reasons that were under investigation, CHP Officer Steve Carapia said.

“As a result, the CTS became pinned under the Freightliner, and both vehicles overturned on the right shoulder,” he said. “The Freightliner came to rest on its left side, and the CTS came to rest on its roof.”

Barona and Mandalena, who was a front seat passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Ramon Mendez, the 72-year-old driver of the truck, walked away with only minor injuries, Carapia said.
