Man killed in head-on crash identified as Hemet resident

Authorities today identified a Hemet man who was killed when a car and a pickup truck collided head on in San Jacinto, leaving another person seriously injured.

Steven Hyde Jr., 31, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened around 2:40 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Sanderson Avenue and the Ramona Expressway, according to the Riverside County coroner’s office.

He was at the wheel of a sedan that collided with a full-sized pickup truck whose female driver was taken to a hospital with major injuries, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Both victims were trapped in their wrecked vehicles, said Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Southern. The female was freed by a Cal Fire crew using the Jaws of Life, he said.

“One vehicle was going east and crossed the westbound lanes, hitting the other vehicle,” said sheriff’s Deputy Angel Ramos.

Neither vehicle was carrying passengers.

The name of the injured driver was not released.

The crash closed Ramona Expressway between Lyon Street and Sanderson Avenue for nearly five hours while deputies investigated the collision, Southern said.

Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call sheriff’s investigators at (951) 654-2702.
