Today is the first full day of a $20 “Summer Solstice” dog adoption program at three Riverside County animal shelters.

Continuing through July 14, the $20 adoption fee covers spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations and a microchip. The special is good at the county’s shelters in Blythe, Jurupa Valley and Thousand Palms, according to the county Department of Animal Services.

“The hope is that this special encourages families to visit the shelter and find a dog that helps make their summer even more fun,” said Animal Services Director Robert Miller.

The special went into effect at 4:08 p.m. Wednesday — coinciding with the official start of the summer solstice.
