Investigators: Blaze at Hemet home intentionally set

A fire that damaged a vacant house in east Hemet today was the work of an arsonist, but no suspects were immediately identified, authorities said.

The non-injury blaze was reported shortly before noon in the 40800 block of Stetson Avenue and was declared under control less than 30 minutes later, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Four engine crews, numbering around a dozen personnel, arrived to find smoke billowing out of the back of the single-story dwelling. The flames were contained to a single room in the house, which sustained about $2,000 in damage, a spokeswoman said.

Further investigation revealed signs of arson, according to the fire department. Officials asked anyone with information to contact the county fire arson hotline at (800) 633-2836.
