Promenade Temecula hosts kids for crafts this summer

Parents and kids left the 10 a.m. showing of “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” or “Kitt Kittredge: An American Girl,” and headed inside where dozens of craft tables awaited the masses.

“We’ve been running this event through AV and Company since 1999,” Annette Valdespino, who used to be Temecula Promenade’s marketing director and now owns AV and Company said. “Our activities are usually (geared) to get kids moving, and include a take-home craft that each child can paint, glue, or color here at the mall.”

It is no coincidence that upcoming activities include a monkey-themed door hanger, the same week that the $1 movie is playing “Chimpanzee,” Valdespino said.

“We run our crafts in conjunction with the Edward’s Cinemas Thursday movie so that kids can go there first and craft afterwards, and hopefully to stay and shop some of the great deals going on this summer at our kid’s stores,” she said.

“We love coming here,” said Laura Hobby, who brought her three children, Ian, Justin, and Brandon out for the day. “We came to these events all last summer, and wouldn’t miss it.”

A staff of college students busily kept tables neat and organized while the artists went to work, including college students and Chaparral High School graduates Naomi  Outlaw and Nina Grandin.

“I love working with the kids, and seeing how creative they can be,” Grandin said.

The coming weeks will see such outdoor themes as “Pirate Day,” where the kids will meet in the outdoor venue in front of the Edward’s Cinemas to go on a real treasure hunt and get a chance to meet and play baseball with the Lake Elsinore Storm mascot Thunder.

“We’ve had over 300 kids each week for the past two weeks,” Sher Haddon, Marketing Coordinator of Promenade Temecula said. “It’s a wonderful turnout. This event allows parents and older siblings the opportunity to engage with the young kids.”

Missed today’s fun? Don’t worry – there is plenty of time to catch up on all the family fun.
