Famed family group are front runners to buy San Diego Padres

Four grandchildren of longtime Los Angeles Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley are in the lead to buy the San Diego Padres baseball club, a San Diego newspaper reported today.

The O’Malley family group, which also includes pro golfer Phil Mickelson, is “the clear leader” in the bidding war for Southern California’s third professional baseball team, UT San Diego reported today.

Walter O’Malley moved the Dodgers to Los Angeles in 1958, and he and his son Peter O’Malley owned the team for more than four decades.

The Padres were created as an expansion team in 1969.

The new generation of MLB owner hopefuls are Peter’s sons Keven and Brian, and his nephews Peter and Tom Seidler.

The other major contender vying to buy the Padres is Gary Jabara, who was described by UT San Diego as an Orange County mobile communications magnate.
