Marines at Camp Pendleton will be training with big guns on M1A1 Abrams tanks today until about midnight.
The tanks, which cost about $5 million apiece, are primarily armed with a rifled, 105 mm cannon and a smooth bore, 120 mm cannon.
The training, which started about 6 a.m., will be taking place in the Zulu and Whiskey areas on the sprawling Marine base, and the shelling may be heard for up to 50 miles away, depending on atmospheric conditions.
