Teen Talk: Despite dark turn, ‘Magic Mike’ delivers solid performance

Hey, SWRNN readers! Here is my review for Steven Soderbergh’s new film, “Magic Mike.”

“Magic Mike” is a film that delves into the world of male stripping. The story follows Magic Mike (Channing Tatum) as he takes a younger performer named The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing, and teachers him how to party, make easy money and pick up women.

The film is directed by Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh and stars Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Olivia Munn, Matthew McConaughey, James Martin Kelly, Joe Manganiello, Cody Horn and Reid Carolin.

The acting in “Magic Mike” was fantastic. Channing Tatum gives, and I seriously can’t believe I’m saying this, but an Oscar-worthy performance, in my opinion. His performance was not only charming and funny, but very grounded and believable. The other show-stealer in this film was Matthew McConaughey as he delivered the funniest scenes and the funniest lines in the entire film.

The cinematography in this movie was really great. Director Steven Soderbergh brings his trademark style to the table here, and I loved it. I don’t think any other director could have made a strip club look as clean as Soderbergh did.

Another plus was the lighting, as it gave the movie a certain vibe that I really liked.

This movie took a very, very dark turn in the third act, and I know several who hated it, and others who loved it. I happen to be on the latter half of that opinion. I’m not going to give away any plot spoilers, but one of the characters makes a decision about halfway through the film that completely makes the movie turn on its head. You’re either going to go with it or against it.

I went with it, but I can see why some wouldn’t like it.

I really enjoyed this film. It had its occasional flaws, but overall, I give “Magic Mike” a strong 4 out of 5.
