Moreno Valley motel robbed, man arrested

Deputies arrested a man who allegedly robbed a Moreno Valley motel at gunpoint after pistol-whipping a female clerk working in the lobby, a sheriff’s department spokesman said today.

Michael Wayne Mitchell Jr.

Dispatchers received a report of an armed robbery in progress at about 4:15 p.m. Monday at the Best Western Motel in the 24800 block of Elder Avenue, said sheriff’s Sgt. Walter Mendez.

When deputies arrived at the motel, a woman working in the lobby told them the robber jumped over a counter and pistol-whipped her before making off with an undisclosed amount of money and a safe, Mendez said.

A witness told deputies the man fled in a late 1990s model red Volkswagen Beetle. On Tuesday, a patrolling officer saw a vehicle that matched the description parked in front of a home in the 12000 block of Harclare Drive in Moreno Valley, according to the sergeant.

At about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies detained Michael Wayne Mitchell Jr., 44, as he walked out of the home, and investigators “found evidence of the robbery” inside, Mendez said.

Deputies arrested Mitchell on suspicion of armed robbery, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment. He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside, where he was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, jail records showed.
