Palm Springs: Teenage bicyclist struck by car

A car struck a 16-year-old boy riding a bicycle at a Palm Springs intersection, causing the teen to fall and strike his head and sending him to the hospital, a police spokesman said today.

The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday near Sunrise Way and Ramon Road, said Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff.

Witnesses said the boy was riding westbound on Ramon when rode in front of the vehicle, which was headed southbound on Sunrise and had just gotten a green light, according to Kovaleff.

The boy, who was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, was not wearing a helmet, Kovaleff said. His condition was not immediately known.

The boy was riding alongside a teenage friend, who was not injured, Kovaleff said.

The car’s driver stopped, cooperated with police and will not be cited, he said.
