A motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries today in Moreno Valley when an unlicensed driver turned in front of him, triggering a head-on collision, authorities said.
Donnie Durden, 30, of Moreno Valley died at the scene of the 6 a.m. crash at the intersection of Pigeon Pass Way and Chambray Drive.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Durden was driving his 1992 Honda Shadow south on Pigeon Pass at about 45 mph when Juan Zacarias Lopez, 24, coming from the opposite direction in a pickup truck, began a left turn onto Chambray.
Lopez “failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic” and crossed in front of Durden, said CHP Officer Steve Carapia.
“Both motorists took evasive action but were unable to avoid a collision,” he said. “As a result, the front of the Toyota collided with the left side of the motorcycle.”
Durden was ejected from the Honda and thrown onto the pavement, according to Carapia.
The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics minutes later.
Lopez was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, probation violations and driving without a license. He was booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside. Bail information was not immediately available.
Carapia said alcohol or drugs were not believed to be a factor in the crash.
