Jurupa Valley: Suspected robber is shot and killed after foot chase with officers

Update:  The suspected robber who was shot and killed by a Jurupa Valley Police officer has been identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s office.

Fontana resident, 53-year-old  Alex Ayala died from his injuries after being transported to Riverside Community Hospital, according to a Coroner’s press release.

Original Story:

A suspected robber was fatally shot and killed by a Jurupa Valley Police officer after he threatened to shoot the officer, officials reported.

Officers responded to an attempted robbery on Saturday July 14 at 9 a.m. in the 3600 block of Pacific Avenue in Jurupa Valley.

Deputies spotted the suspect and he immediately fled the scene on foot and the officers gave chase.

When one of the officers caught up with the suspect he shouted he had a gun and threatened to shoot the deputy.

In fear of his life, the officer fired a shot at the suspect, striking him, Deputy Ramos said in a written report.

Additional arriving officers immediately provided medical assistance to the suspect and called Cal Fire and paramedics to the scene.

The man was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries, according to a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department press release.

Investigators from the Jurupa Valley Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation.

The involved officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy.

The name of the suspect is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Deputy Ramos said.

Anyone with additional details regarding this ongoing investigation is encouraged to call investigator Jason Corey at Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777 or investigator Joel Pabelico at 951-955-2600.

Thanks Riverside Sheriff’s department for keeping us safe. Our prayers go out to the officer for having to make this decision.
